　本書は、古代から現代にいたる、現実と空想の両方の種類の旅が、どのように語られてきたかを考察する論文集です。旅に関するさまざまな語りを分析することで、文化の境界を越えた旅の宗教的、心理的、教育的、歴史的意味合いが見えてきます。

　私の論考は、夏目漱石の小説「草枕」に焦点を当てています。この小説の舞台は、漱石が英語教師として4年間勤めた第五高等学校（現在の熊本大学）からほど近い、熊本の山間部です。現代社会から逃れ、芸術的インスピレーションを再発見するために熊本の山中を旅する小説の主人公について考察しています。

　文学を学ぶ学生だけでなく、旅を愛する読者にとっても、興味深い一冊となるでしょう。
