講義題目	Modern English Literature: 1900-1930
授業概要	This course examines the works of some of the most important writers in the first thirty years of the twentieth century. We will examine the stylistic approaches of these writers, and the relationship between literature and history. The texts we shall study will include: The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective story; Heart of Darkness (1902), Joseph Conrad's short novel about a journey into the heart of Africa; Dubliners (1914), James Joyce's collection of short stories about Ireland; T. S. Eliot's comic love poem, 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' (1917); Wilfred Owen's poem about the First World War, ' Strange Meeting' (1918); Virginia Woolf's novel about life in London, Mrs Dalloway (1925); and Agatha Christie's popular detective novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926).

授業概要	This course examines some of the most important English drama, fiction and poetry of the past seventy years. The texts we shall study will include: W. H. Auden's poem about the even of the First World War, 'September 1, 1939' (1939); George Orwell's fantasy novel about the dangers of political revolution, Animal Farm (1945); William Golding's novel about a group of children stranded on a desert island, Lord of the Flies (1954); Samuel Beckett's famous play about two tramps, Waiting for Godot (1955); David Lodge's novel about his life as a child in the years after the Second World War, Out of the Shelter (1970); and Julian Barnes's collection of short stories, A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989).
