Tag-based cooperation in humans: is accent special?

Recent theory and evidence in biology and psychology have motivated broad claims about the evolutionary importance of accent as an priority guide to affiliation and cooperation in humans. In this talk, I will present the results of two experimental studies exploring how accent and skin colour influence Brazilian children's friendship and sharing preferences. We compared children's preferences in racially and linguistically heterogeneous and homogeneous towns in the eastern Amazon region. Results show a local-accent preference provided that there is no cost to self. Preliminary analysis further suggests that preferences are guided by both accent and skin colour and that, contrary to previous fundings with US children, accent does not trump skin colour as a guide to social preferences.
