【RAI】January Events and Film Festival



The RAI has a couple of events coming up in January that I would like to draw your attention to.  I would also like to remind you about the call for submissions for the upcoming 13th RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film, which will be held in Edinburgh in June 2013.

We will be hosting a book launch of The Making of Asmat Art: Indigenous Art in a World Perspective by Nick Stanley.  The book launch will be on Wednesday16 January between 6.30 and 8.00 pm here at the Royal Anthropological Institute, 50 Fitzroy Street , London W1T 5BT .  There will also be a small exhibition on show entitled ‘Historic imagery and the RAI: Lord Moyne’s engagement with the Asmat of Dutch New Guinea 1929–1936’.  Drinks will be provided.  There is no need to book.

The first Reviewer Meets Reviewed seminar series of 2013 will be held at the British Museum ’s Anthropology Library and Research Centre on Thursday 17 January at 10.00 am (tea and coffee served from 9.30 am).  This will be a discussion between Dr Timothy Jenkins, author of The Life of Property: House, Family and Inheritance in Béarn, South-West France, and Professor Robert Layton, who reviewed the book for the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute.  To book for the event please contact Ted Goodliffe on

Finally I would like to remind you of the call for submissions for the 13th RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film that will be held in Edinburgh , Scotland , 13 - 16 June 2013.  The festival is sponsored by the Royal Anthropological Institute jointly with Departments of Social Anthropology, University of Edinburgh , University of St Andrews , University of Aberdeen and the National Museum of Scotland.  Submissions are invited from any field of ethnographic film.  Only films released (first screened in public) after 1st January 2010 are eligible for competitive screening. 

The deadline for submission: 11 January 2013. (Please ensure, that preview tapes arrive at the RAI by 20 January).  Please submit the form and stills by e-mail ( and send the preview DVD and proof of entry fee by post.
